March Rains
Published :
18/03/2009
Usually March is the beginning of the end of the rains. This year March has already seen more rain at Lion Camp than January and February combined. It is mid-March, the lagoon in front of camp is flowing and our boat is tied up to the swimming pool deck.
The elephants are certainly enjoying all the water. Patrick watched 25 of them swimming in the wafwa early yesterday morning. The hippos have also moved back into the lagoon as the river is too deep and fast-flowing for them –particularly those with young.
We have been very fortunate this year as we have not had the flooding of the past two years. The local farmers are relieved to have a good harvest after two years of flooded crops.
With April fast approaching it won’t be long before the rains stop, the land begins to dry out and the 2009 safari season begins.
