Conservation

As a responsible operator we have made a commitment to enrich the lives of the local communities, we have strong links with the following organisations in the area, in 2013 we joined the Luangwa Community & Conservation Fund. A portion of the rate you pay goes directly to help these conservation and community initiatives.

Lion Camp is an active supporter of Conservation South Luangwa (www.slcszambia.org). As well as monthly financial contributions, we provide practical assistance whenever possible.

Conservation South Luangwa is a non-governmental organisation, it as originally set up as a society in 2003. It has grown organically and to date they are involved in the following projects in Luangwa:

  • Wildlife Rescue
  • Human – Wildlife Conflict Mitigation
  • Law Enforcement: Deploying anti-poaching patrols
  • Community awareness and education

If you are coming to Lion Camp, you can help CSL and Chipembele Wildlife Education Centre by visiting the Pack for a Purpose website. We are proud members of this initiative which allows travellers like you to make a lasting impact in the community at your travel destination. If you save just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and take supplies for area schools or medical clinics in need, you’ll make a priceless impact in the lives of our local children and families. Please click here to see what supplies are needed for our projects.

Lion Camp is a corporate member of the Zambian Ornithological Society and a supporter of Birdlife International. We have donated prizes for their charity auctions, and hosted a ‘Rare Bird Club’ members event.

Lion Camp is also a supporter of the Chipembele Wildlife Education Centre. Cofounded by Anna & Steve Tolan, it opened in 2001.

The aim of the centre is to educate children living in the local community about the value, wonder and rarity of South Luangwa’s wildlife. Also to demonstrate the unique benefits that it brings to the local community.
